The hot chicken is such a far cry from 400 Degrees and Prince’s South that it’s not worth trying. Nashville Jam Café and Ruby Ann’s, the most similar businesses in town, are frankly everything that Biscuit Love is not. I wish I could sell them my father’s 5-star biscuit recipe. But I couldn’t go above 3 stars due to the biscuit quality. My synopsis is that Biscuit Love is inventive, trendy, and popular, and they’re putting forth an honest effort to offer an authentic Nashville experience. Not even utilizing the masterful blueberry compote as a condiment could I outweigh the tasteless interior. But the sugary outer coating and the spectacular lemon mascarpone weren’t enough sweetness to outdo the bland inside. Hey, if you can fry it, Southerners will eat it! Biscuit Love nailed the interior texture, akin to a nearly cooked biscuit still doughy and soft. That’s a lot of letdown for an $11 biscuit! Let’s move on to the bonuts, the biscuit/doughnut hybrid invented in Chicago in 2014, rising to fame (no pun intended) all over America around 2016, and now available at a number of Nashville eateries. Even the pickles were too bland and too thin. Whatever it was, it was certainly NOT Nashville hot chicken. It was the spicy coating that was simply all wrong. Despite preferring white meat chicken, the dark meat thigh that comes with the biscuit is acceptable thanks to its quality and enormous size. I won’t be too critical of the chicken because this isn’t a hot chicken restaurant, but the chicken had issues. The biscuit tops are browned and nearly burnt, causing a hard and practically inedible shell. The flavor of the biscuit wasn’t good, definitely not sufficient to have the word “biscuit” in the title of your establishment. Unfortunately, there was too much of a downside. So, did it meet those lofty standards? The upside was the texture of the biscuit, soft and doughy while structurally sound. But Nashvillians have extraordinarily high standards for foods like barbecue, hamburgers, biscuits, and especially hot chicken! You can’t be mediocre in Music City anymore and expect to compete. It looks good on paper, spicy fried chicken with pickles, mustard, and honey. But what about the product? As a huge fan of hot chicken, I was naturally compelled to order The Princess, a title that might pay homage to Prince’s, the world’s original hot chicken. The competition is intense, and Biscuit Love has the look, the reputation, and the menu. They’ve played a role in the city’s cosmopolitan renaissance, the new Nashville where acclaimed chefs open modern spaces highlighting local foods with innovative dishes. I’ve long anticipated a visit to the iconic local eatery Biscuit Love, a popular Nashville restaurant known for its Southern cuisine. If you need a place to park, there is a parking garage across the street for an apartment complex that had the same deal: free parking for the first 1.5 hours or whatever. There is a parking lot that’s free until something like 1.5 hours, but it’s not too terribly big. Parking is a mess but that’s not unusual for a downtown area with lots of shops and restaurants. Would’ve been nice to have an overhead fan just for some air movement in the humidity. Even with the shaded tables outside, it was still quite hot. We barely had to wait in line which was nice since it was over 90° outside, and we sat outside since we had our dog. The fried chicken on it, of course, was super good. With so little gravy, it made the biscuit crumbly and kind of hard to eat. My husband got the fried chicken and gravy biscuit which was also good, but definitely needed more gravy. The actual biscuits held their structure pretty well which I’m guessing is due to the fact that they were “French toasted” in the egg wash. I kind of wish I could’ve gotten a different options like strawberry just because there didn’t seem to be a ton of flavor in the compote. (First of all, sorry about the partially-eaten food in the pictures.) I got the French toast biscuit with blueberry compote and lemon which was good.
